MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks forward Khris Middleton remains limited in practice but said Thursday he’s hopeful about starting the season on time as he recovers from surgery on his right knee.“That’s the plan,” the three-time All-Star said after the Bucks’ practice. “Sometimes things change, but so far I’ve been on pace with everything I’ve been doing. We’ll go over the schedule again and see where I’m at, see how I feel and just keep track of things that way. I don’t want to set a hard date for when I’ll be out there because it’s all about feel and comfort.”Middleton says he feels fine, but he’s only participated in individual workouts so far in his first season since signing a three-year, $102 million contract to stay with the Bucks. The 6-foot-7 wing underwent surgery after the Bucks’ first-round playoff loss to the Miami Heat.“No setbacks,” Bucks coach Adrian Griffin said. ”He’s still on track and he’s working out hard every day. MILAN (AP) — Italy has impounded the Spanish charity rescue ship Open Arms for violating rules by Italy’s right-wing government banning multiple rescues at sea, the charity said Thursday. The boat is blocked from leaving the port of Carrera in Tuscany for 20 days and the charity has been levied a fine of between 3,000 and 10,000 euros ($3,200-$10,500), the charity Open Arms said.Open Arms called the sanctions a violation of the law of the sea that requires boats to rescue people in distress. It said it was being punished for rescuing 176 people in three operations, including people of “extreme vulnerability.” Italy assigned a port after the first two rescues of 69 people in international waters Saturday. Open Arms said it then received a mayday call from the Seabird aerial surveillance charity that another migrant boat was in danger, overcrowded with 109 people. After ascertaining its ship was the only rescue boat in the area, Open Arms said, it informed authorities that the c...Stock market today: Wall Street drifts ahead of a highly anticipated jobs report coming Friday

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is drifting Thursday, as pressure from the bond market stays high due to worries about a too-hot U.S. job market. The S&P 500 was virtually unchanged in late trading, a day before a highly anticipated report on the job market that could sway the Federal Reserve’s view on interest rates. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 29 points, or 0.1%, as of 3 p.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.1% higher.Stocks have struggled since the summer under the weight of soaring Treasury yields in the bond market, which undercut stock prices and crimp corporate profits. Yields have leaped as traders acquiesce to a new normal where the Federal Reserve is likely to keep its main interest rate at a high level for a long time, as it tries to extinguish high inflation.Treasury yields wavered up and down Thursday after a report showed fewer U.S. workers applied for unemployment benefits last week than economists expected. That’s a sign fewer workers ar...Evidence at New York fraud trial shows that Trump’s financial statements were key to a loan deal

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump has said he never thought his yearly financial statements “would be taken very seriously.” But evidence Thursday at his New York civil fraud trial showed the statements were integral to some of his business empire’s loan deals.A state lawyer showed letters that former Trump company controller Jeffrey McConney sent to a bank, saying he was providing copies of Trump’s 2015 and 2016 financial statements as required under the conditions of a loan for his Seven Springs estate north of New York City.McConney was the first ex-insider from the Trump Organization to testify at the trial, where New York Attorney General Letitia James is alleging that Trump and his business deceived banks, insurers and others with fraudulent financial statements that vastly overvalued Trump Tower, Mar-a-Lago and other assets. Trump denies any wrongdoing and says James, a Democrat, is just trying to damage his 2024 presidential campaign.
