Hong Kong to cut elected council seats in blow to democracy

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 17:41:03 GMT

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong’s leader on Tuesday stepped up a campaign to shut down further democratic challenges by unveiling plans to eliminate most directly elected seats on local district councils, the last major political representative bodies chosen by the public.Chief Executive John Lee said the proposed overhaul will reduce the proportion of directly elected seats in the municipal-level organization to about 20% — from some 90% currently. That is even lower than the level when these bodies were first set up in the 1980s, when Hong Kong was ruled by Britain. He said the rest of the 470 seats will be filled by government appointees, rural committee chairpersons and others elected by local committees that are staffed by many pro-establishment figures.“I do not agree that pure counting (of) election votes mean democracy,” he said. “Different places have their own systems that must take into consideration all the characteristics and all the elements of that place.” The planned elec...

The festival has been scaled back or held virtually since the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning this year is its return to a fully live and in person festival.Chris Morris, festival director, spoke with CFRC about the format of Homegrown, adding that it is not like other music festivals that start with smaller artists in the afternoon and have big headliners in the evening; it is a mix of smaller and bigger musicians in town that play after one another. Each venue has a broad musical genre picked so people can choose where to go for the da...

Kloepfer said. Gun owners group suing Polis, state over new laws Kloepfer started working on the idea for a science fair project. Jamie Dettmer is opinion editor at POLITICO Europe.“We were invisible before, and to become visible is a huge step,” historian Olena Dzhedzhora said, as we discussed how Ukraine has drawn the attention of the rest of Europe and the United States. The dignified, gray-haired historian joined the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv as it was being founded in 2002 — the first Catholic university to open anywhere in the former Soviet Union — just three years after the country declared independence. And since Russia’s invasion, Dzhedzhora, an archeologist-turned-medievalist, has been busy making darkness visible, along with around 30 volunteers — students, lecturers and others — who’ve been video recording and transcribing war testimonies gathered from people of all walks of life in Ukraine.Last year, Lviv became a sort of Noah’s Ark, crowded with the displaced. And Dzhedzhora’s university stopped functioning for months — sheltering war refugees, feeding them, collecting medicine and rai...
